Sensor unit comprises a substrate (303), on which receptor molecules (306, 307) are immobilized. Electrodes (308a, 308b, 311a, 311b) detect changes in resistance, voltage or capacity as molecules in an analyte (309) hybridize with the receptor molecules and produce a signal. Simultaneously optical detectors (310, 312) detect changes in intensity due to the hybridization and produce a second signal. A processor compares the signals and produces an output of they fall within an acceptable tolerance. Independent claims are included for: (a) a sensor system containing several units; and (b) a method for operating the unit.
