A sea water desalination still has an evaporation chamber which is located just above or just below the level at which a water column creates a pressure of one atmosphere. The evaporation process takes place in an almost fully evacuated evaporation chamber. Fresh water is pumped into the top of the water column, reaching to the evaporation chamber level at which there is atmospheric pressure, and cooled water is allowed to drain without supplementary pump action. When evaporation takes place in the evaporation chamber below that height at which atmospheric pressure pertains, fresh water can enter the evaporation chamber without supplementary pump action. Cooled water and distillate yield are drained by pump action. Steam is condensed by a compressor. Water flows from the inlet into the evaporation chamber via an inclined plane towards the outlet. Condensation is driven by heat exchange action over cooled surfaces and drainage gullies. Air liberated in the process is discharged to ambient air via a compressor. The assembly is maintained at the correct height with respect to the water surface by float bearings.
