1,221,403. Ethylbenzene. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 12 Feb., 1969 [12 Feb., 1968], No. 7702/69. Heading C5E. Ethylbenzene is prepared by simultaneously contacting ethylene, benzene and an aluminium chloride catalyst complex in a reactor zone maintained at 90-250‹ C. and a pressure of at least 280 p.s.i.g. for not more than 2 minutes, the molar ratio of benzene to ethylene being at least 1 : 1 and the molar ratio of AlCl 3 in the catalyst complex, to benzene is 0À01 : 1 to 1 : 1. Preferably the product is quickly cooled to below 50‹ C. and ethylbenzene recovered. The AlCl 3 catalyst complex may be prepared by dissolving AlCl 3 in about an equimolar amount of diethylbenzene while passing HCl over the mixture until all the AlCl 3 has gone into solution. The residual catalyst complex may be separated from the product mixture, adjusted with respect to the AlCl 3 content so that the AlCl 3 : benzene ratio is equal to that of the incoming catalyst complex stream and recycled to said stream.
|
