The present invention relates to potassium alginate as a novel pharmaceutical excipient and compositions and healthcare foods thereof. Potassium alginate can be used to prepare chemical drug-containing tablets and granules and also to prepare pills, tablets, granules and capsules of Chinese traditional medicines. Instead of sodium alginate, a current used excipient with potassium alginate, the actions of K<+>-increasing and Na<+>-removing can be effective for human body. In addition to excipient, potassium alginate is used as a novel antihypertensive agent, which is also referred as "Na<+>-removing agent in digestive tract". Thus, the novel antihypertensive and antihyperlipidemic compositions and healthcare products can be obtained by combining potassium alginate with various pharmaceuticals, Chinese traditional medicines and natural foods. Potent, rapid and long duration of action as well as low toxicity and dosage are provided with said compositions and healthcare products. |
