The invention relates to a method for identifying pain-controlling substances using BNPI and/or DNPI. The invention also relates to the use of compounds thus identified, of active agents that bind to BNPI and/or DNPI, of antibodies directed against BNPI and/or DNPI, of antisense nucleotides against BNPI and/or DNPI, or of BNPI and/or DNPI, or partial proteins thereof, in addition to the use of corresponding polynucleotides as medicaments for pain therapy and as diagnostic agents.
