An operating process for a fuel cell system (1) comprising at least one fuel cell (8) supplies almost pure hydrogen, containing little carbon monoxide and inert gas, to the anode (9) in a circuit (12) and feeds oxidant discontinuously and in very small amounts to the cathode (11). An Independent claim is also included for use of the fuel cell system above as an auxiliary power unit for a land, sea or air vehicle.
