The present invention relates to a method for removing heavy metal compounds from a polymer substrate, in which the polymer substrate is contacted with an acid in a reactor at an elevated temperature, wherein the polymer substrate is contacted with an acid in the form of a halogen-containing gas in the reactor at a temperature below the melting point of the polymer substrate, with the heavy metal compounds from the polymer substrate being converted into halogenide compounds of the heavy metal.
