The invention relates to a method of estimating the transfer function of a channel for the variable transmission of a multicarrier signal (A), which is performed using a frequency digital signal (Y) which corresponds to the signal received. The inventive method comprises a step (6) involving the calculation of the value of a first estimated transfer function (C1) of the transmission channel. Said method is characterised in that it also comprises the following steps, namely: a step (8) whereby the value of the autocorrelation function (R(C1)) of the aforementioned first estimated transfer function (C1) is calculated, thereby enabling the separation of the noise component; a step (10) in which a noise reduction filter (F) is determined from said autocorrelation function (R(C1)); and a step (12) whereby the noise reduction filter (F) is applied to the first estimated transfer function (C1) in order to deliver a second estimated, noise-corrected transfer function (C2) of the transmission channel. The invention is particularly suitable for receiving digital television signals.
