A method for fitting an airbag to a mounting has a ring shaped support structure with two unequal, parallel radial flanges (12, 14) between an outward facing flange (16). The inner edge (22) of the airbag is secured to the outward facing flange with the airbag fitted over the structure. The airbag is secured using adhesive and can be further secured with a clamping ring, and is folded into the space (18) between the radial flanges. The airbag is folded and rolled in such a way as to facilitate even and rapid inflation. The folded airbag is pushed into the compact space by shaped tamping tools (24). The support ring can be circular or any selected shape with rounded corners.
