A mobile reactor generates acetylene gas for welding especially using calcium carbide and water. The gas generator has a cylindrical reactor into which a feed of ultra-fine calcium carbide powder is introduced by compressed air. Alternatively, the calcium carbide is introduced via a ring-jet together with a suitable liquid e.g. glycol. Gas generation is regulated by the rate at which water, calcium carbide and methylated spirits are introduced at suitable intervals by jets, creating an explosive gas mixture. The resulting calcium hydroxide sludge is pumped out with the support of scouring jets. The mobile unit consists preferably of a battery of cylindrical reactor units which are capable of maintaining a constant supply of gas. The gas yield may be improved by the incorporation of stainless steel reactors.
