An elevator is driven by a toothed belt in association with a counter-weight, and a passenger cabin (1) which is guided between rails (8) and a frame around the cabin mid-point. The cabin is linked via a cable and pulleys to a fixed anchorage. The motor (3) is located under the counter-weight. The cables (5) have no lifting/lowering function. The lifting and lowering power is delivered esp. via a toothed belt (6).
