A waste water treatment process produces dilute sludge which is de-watered in a thickening assembly in which water passes through a sieve wall (2) leaving solids behind. The separation chamber (1) is sub-divided especially into a thick sludge collection chamber (4) and a filtrate drainage chamber (6). The mixture of solid and liquid is pumped to the thick sludge collection chamber (4) which has a sludge skimmer (11) which moves relative to the sieve wall. The separation chamber has a sieve pipe (3) which rotates about its longitudinal axis and is surrounded by the pumped sludge. The gap is adjustable between the sludge skimmer and sieve wall surface. The pipe (3) rotates back and forth in short cycles. The chamber (4) housing is linked to a vibrator and has a removable semi-circular section.
