Disclosed is a method for producing a surface coating (101), which includes activation of an initial substance, particularly activation of monomers or a short-chain compound for forming polymers or a cross linkage, on the surface of a carrier (103) by shortwave electromagnetic radiation at invisible wavelengths. The initial substance is subjected to longer wave radiation by a second source of radiation (115) with high power density, particularly radiation in the near infrared range, essentially simultaneous to or immediately preceding radiation with the short electromagnetic waves of a first source of radiation (123).
