PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the electric power consumption of a plasma display device without affording the sense of discomfort to the image quality of the device. SOLUTION: An input image signal is multiplied by such luminance decreasing characteristics as to reduce the luminance increasingly toward a screen peripheral part from a screen center in accordance with an average signal level, the average signal level distribution of the screen central part and the average signal level distribution of the screen peripheral part and to provide the luminance value with a specified region the screen peripheral part, by which the luminance is reduced without the sense of discomfort with respect to the intrinsic image and the reduction of the electric power consumption is made possible. Also, the further reduction of the electric power consumption is made possible by performing the above luminance control on the time base with respect to the still picture. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
