PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide rod-like or fiber-like porous silica or silica/metal composite material particles which can be synthesized by using an inexpensive alkali silicate as a silica source and using a highly safe nonionic surfactant as a template and adopting conditions including low temperatures, atmospheric pressure, and a relatively short time and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The porous silica or silica/metal complex particles have the form of rods or fibers of micron order, regularly arranged pores with diameters of 4-7 nm, and an ordered structure of two different scales.
