PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new cyclodextrin derivative having wide applications and to preferentially alkylate the secondary hydroxy groups of a cyclodextrin. SOLUTION: The method effects controlled alkylation of the cyclodextrin in a reaction mixture. The basicity of the reaction mixture is sufficient to initiate the dissociation of the cyclodextrin into a cyclodextrin anion. The method for preparing the cyclodextrin derivatives comprises (1) a step of dissolving the cyclodextrin and an alkylating agent in a suitable solvent and (2) a step of gradually adding a base to the solution obtained in step (1) to obtain a reaction medium.
