PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize the quantity of ink being disused by sucking ink of such a quantity as corresponding to the remaining state of ink from a main ink tank to a recording head. SOLUTION: The inkjet recorder comprises a carriage 3 carrying the recording head 4 and sub-ink tanks 5a, 5b, 5c and 5d for supplying ink thereto, main ink tanks 6a, 6b, 6c and 6d capable of supplying ink to the sub-ink tanks, a unit 7 for connecting both tanks and capable of abutting on and separating from the main ink tanks, a cap member 30 capable of abutting on and separating from the recording head, a pump 32 for sucking ink from the recording head through the cap member, and a means for controlling the suction pump. A means for detecting existence of residual ink in the sub-ink tanks is also provided and the control means controls the suction pump to perform a plurality of suction recovery operations of different ink suction quantity selectively depending on the detection results of the means for detecting the residual quantity of ink.
