PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the sequence time from zooming to the completion of focusing by eliminating out focus accompanying the zooming. SOLUTION: The lens driving unit is equipped with a driving mechanism 70 which drives variable power optical systems 40 and 50, a driving mechanism 80 which drives a focusing optical system 60, and a control circuit 100 which drives and controls the driving mechanisms 70 and 80; and information regarding the focusing position of the focusing optical system 60 corresponding to variable power positions of the variable power optical systems 40 and 50 is previously stored in a storage part 111, an encoder 93 detects variable power positions of the variable power optical systems 40 and 50, and a control circuit 100 performs a focusing operation nearly at the same time with a power varying operation according to output information of the encoder 93 and the stored information in the storage part 111. Consequently, a focusing state is always obtained in zooming and the sequence time from the start of zooming to the completion of focusing is shortened. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
