<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost and high-reliability optical communication device which has a spread part for pitch conversion since an optical fiber pitch P1 of a multiple optical fiber ribbon is 250 μm while a pitch P2 of an optical elements needs to be ≥500 μm when the optical elements are mounted on a substrate and the optical fiber pitch needs to be expanded somewhere when the multiple optical fiber ribbon is connected to a substrate mounted with optical elements as many as the optical fibers. <P>SOLUTION: The optical communication device includes: a connector which holds M (M≥4) optical fibers arrayed in parallel at the fixed pitch P1 and project portions of the fibers backward, a substrate provided with M parallel V grooves to which the optical fibers projecting from the connector are inserted and fixed and M parallel optical waveguides connecting therewith at the pitch P2 (500 to 1,500 μm) wider than the pitch P1; M optical elements which are provided at ends of the optical waveguides on the substrate; and a package which has lead pins and where the connector is fixed on the front and the substrate is fixed on the back.
