PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the accuracy for detecting an object passing within the scanning range of scanning light in a shut-off-type object detector for detecting the object, by detecting that the scanning light from a light scanning means is shut off, with a light receiving means. SOLUTION: The object detector is composed by being provided with scanning means (11 to 13) for deflecting and scanning a laser beam emitted from a light emitting part 10, a retroreflection part 2 for retroreflecting the scanning light from the light scanning means, light receiving means (14 to 16) for receiving reflected light retroreflected by the retroreflection part 2 so as to generate a reception signal, and an object-presence detection means 17 for detecting the object within the scanning range (a scanning angleθ=0°toθ<SB>max</SB>) of the scanning light on the basis of the reception signal. An output adjusting table 32 for adjusting an emission level of the laser beam emitted from the light emitting part 10 on the basis of the scanning angleθof the light scanning means is installed, and a detection characteristic of the object due to a change in the reception signal is compensated.
