PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save time and cost to determine the life of a catalyst by simply and accurately predicting a long-term fuel reaction rate from data of a short- term combustion test. SOLUTION: In a combustor mounted with a catalyst, to which gas including fuel and oxygen is supplied to develop a catalytic combustion reaction, a catalytic surface reaction rate constant of the catalyst is obtained from measured values as a function of catalyst surface temperature and combustion time, and an axial catalyst surface temperature and an axial gas temperature are obtained from measured values as a function of axial distance or a function of axial distance and combustion time. The obtained functions are used to set a material balance equation of fuel in the combustor, and the material balance equation is solved for a plurality of different combustion times to produce simulation values of a fuel reaction rate changing with time. The material balance equation is subjected to fitting so that the obtained simulation values of a fuel reaction rate changing with time match measured values of a fuel reaction rate changing with time in the combustor.
