PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device which is small-sized and can project a color image of sufficient lightness. SOLUTION: White light W from a light source 1 is made incident on a diffraction grating laminate 4 formed by laminating diffraction grating elements 5R, 5G, and 5B which have diffraction grating effect of reflecting wavelength light of one of red, blue, and green and transmitting other wavelength light in the absence of an electric field and lose the effect when applied with an electric field to transmit light beams of all the wavelength. Light beams of red, green, and blue emitted in order from the diffraction grating laminate 4 are split by a polarization beam splitter 13 into S-polarized components and P-polarized components, which are made incident on 1st and 2nd reflection type display bodies 17a and 17b. Then monochromatic image light beams whose planes of polarization are rotated by 90°from the incident light beams are projected from those reflection type display bodies 17a and 17b, both monochromatic image light beams from the display bodies are put one over the other by the polarization beam splitter 14 and projected on a projection system 29, thereby displaying a color image through time-difference composition of the monochromatic color image light beams of red, green, and blue.
