PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide low-cost austenitic stainless steel which has corrosion resistance better than that of conventional SUS316L-equivalent steel and is suitable as a material for constituting a urea synthesis apparatus. SOLUTION: This austenitic stainless steel comprises 0.1-0.5 mass% Si, 0.8-2.0 mass% Mn, 11-16 mass% Ni, 21-24 mass% Cr, 0.5-1.5 mass% Mo, 1.0 mass% or less W, 0.5-2.5 mass% Cu, 0.15-0.3 mass% N, 0.03 mass% or less Al, 0.01 mass% or less Ca, and the balance being Fe and impurities containing 0.02 mass% or less C, 0.03 mass% or less P, 0.005 mass% or less S, 0.02 mass% or less Nb, and 0.003 mass% or less B. Preferably, the Ni-bal defined by equation (1): Ni-bal.=Nieq.-1.36×Creg. [wherein Nieq.=30(C+N)+0.5(Mn+Cu)+Ni+11.6; and Creg.=1.5Si+Cr+Mo+0.8W] is -2 or more. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
