<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation rise agent for giving desired retardation to an optical film without generating any bleedout. <P>SOLUTION: The retardation rise agent for optical films is made of at least one type selected from compounds expressed by the following generation expression (I), general expression (II), general expression (III), and general expression (IV). In the expressions, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>6</SP>, R<SP>7</SP>, and R<SP>8</SP>-R<SP>11</SP>indicate an aromatic ring or a complex ring having a substitute base at a specific position or an arbitrary position, X<SP>1</SP>and the like indicate single bond or -NR<SP>3</SP>-.
