PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost and simple object recognition method and apparatus using a line-type passive distance measuring device used in a camera or the like. SOLUTION: Whenever a relative-position change part 3 changes a relative position between a measuring object 1 and an imaging part 2 in the direction of a width between a pair of line sensors 22R, 22L by each width portion, a processing part 4 makes the imaging part 2 image the measuring object 1 so as to obtain a pair of line images. Whenever the pair of line images are obtained, a distance up to the measuring object 1 is measured in a plurality of distance measuring areas on the basis of the pair of line images, distance measurement data are stored in a RAM 44, and the processing part 3 discriminates the measuring object according to its storage content.
