PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining the failure of a fuel level sensor of an automobile capable of accurately determining whether the fuel level sensor has failed or not. SOLUTION: The method for determining the failure of the fuel level sensor of the automobile comprises a stage for determining whether predetermined monitoring conditions are satisfied or not; a stage for counting the time by which the automobile has traveled on condition that a fuel level is within a predetermined range, and that the deviation between the maximum value and minimum value of the fuel level is less than a specific value in the case that the monitoring conditions are satisfied; a stage for determining whether the state that the rate of change in the opening of a throttle valve is greater than a specific value is detected at least once or more or not, during the counting after a lapse of a predetermined counted time; a stage for integrating the number of failures in the case that the state that the rate of change in the opening of the throttle valve is greater than the specific value is detected at least once or more; and a stage for determining that the rationality of the fuel level sensor has failed in the case that the integrated number of failures exceeds a specific value.
