Very hard coatings, having excellent electro-insulating properties and resistance to moisture, are produced on metal foils for electric condensers by deposition from the vapour phase of a cpd(s) formed by heating under vacuum a mixture of SiO2 with elemental B or a source thereof, such as a metal boride, whose metallic component (Mo, W, Tr, Ta or the like) is not volatile at the temp. applied. The dielectric layer deposited on the metal-foil contains a chemical combination of silicon, boron and oxygen. The operating temperatures are relatively low (e.g. 1300 degrees C), whereby the process is simplified and the costs are relatively low.
|
