The process for operating a vehicle having a lean running engine comprises forming a status signal depending on the value of the variable quantity, storing and displaying the status signal for introducing an operating method of the engine for passive desulfurization of the catalyst, and adjusting the engine to an operating method. The engine is operated at a lambda value of less than 1 depending on the value of the variable quantity. The degree of activity of the engine is decreased by not more than 3 %, preferably 2 %, especially 1 % or 0 %, especially at an operating point which corresponds with a constant journey on the flat at a 20degrees C external temperature.
