PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a river observing apparatus capable of detecting the quantity of flow of a river. SOLUTION: A television camera 11 picks up images including images across the approximately whole width of the river in the vicinity of a location at which a higher step on the upstream side and a lower step on the downstream side are formed across the width of the river. The picked-up images are converted into digital data by an A/D converter 12 and stored in an image memory 13. Regions having high luminance in the images correspond to regions in which the water is turbid. A processing part 14 binarizes the images in the image memory 13 to acquire binarized image data. Based on the binarized image data, the processing part 14 determines both the overall width of the actual area of water flow of the river in the widthwise direction of the river in the vicinity of the steps, and a water level on the higher side in the vicinity of the steps in the actual area of water flow of the river. The processing part determines the quantity of flow of the river based on the determined overall width and the water level. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
