PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polycarbosilane in which a phenyl group having a phenolic hydroxy group protected with an organic substituent is bonded to each Si atom in the main chain and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The polycarbosilane has repeating units represented by formula [1] (wherein R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>3</SB>, and R<SB>4</SB>are each a 1-6C monovalent organic group being an aliphatic saturated hydrocarbon group, an alicyclic saturated hydrocarbon group, or a phenyl group; and at least one of R<SB>2</SB>to R<SB>4</SB>is a tertiary-carbon- containing aliphatic saturated hydrocarbon group, a 4C or higher alicyclic saturated hydrocarbon group, or a phenyl group). The method comprises polymerizing an organosilicon compound represented by formula [2] (wherein R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>3</SB>, and R<SB>4</SB>are as defined in formula [1]).
