PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for detecting an intruder in a crime-prevention system are provided to correctly obtain the area and distance of stereo video information to find out the absolute size of an intruder. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for detecting an intruder in a crime-prevention system includes a stereo camera(100), a video signal processor(122), a digital signal processor(130), and a communication and output unit(140). The stereo camera photographs left and right images using light-emitting diodes, synthesizes the photographed images and converts the synthesized image into an analog video signal. The video signal processor converts the analog video signal into a digital video signal. The digital signal processor receives the digital video signal, performs an operation function according to a detection algorithm and outputs generated parallel video signals and a detection signal. The communication and output unit converts the parallel video signals into serial video signals and outputs an alarm signal according to the detection signal.
