LIQUID CRYSTAL COMPOSITION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition having high voltage retention required for a liquid crystal display device of AM-LCD type, and having a wide nematic liquid crystal temperature range, a low viscosity, and a large birefringence. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition is composed of A group compounds (each having an anisotropic dielectric constant of >+1.5) and B group compounds (each having an anisotropic dielectric constant of -1.5 to +1.5), and has a nematic phase temperature range of 75 to -10°C and a birefringence (Δn) of 0.16-0.35, wherein the A group compounds are composed of compounds expressed by formulae (1) [R1is an alkyl or the like; A1is cyclohexylene, phenylene or the like; Z1is -COO-, a single bond or the like; X1to X4are each H, F or Cl; Q1is -OCH2- or the like; Y1is F or Cl; and (l) and (m) are each 0, 1 or 2, provided that (l)+(m) is 1 to 3] and (2) (R2is an alkyl or the like; any one of Z2and Z3is -C≡C- and the other is a single bond; X5to X10are each H, F or Cl; Q2is -OCH2- or the like; and Y2is F or Cl) and further contain one or more compounds expressed by formula (3) [R3is an alkyl or the like; A2is cyclohexylene, phenylene or the like; Z4is -COO-, a single bond or the like; X11and X12are each H, F or Cl; and (n) is 1 or 2] in an amount of 5-15%.
