PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition having high voltage retention required for a liquid crystal display device of AM-LCD type, and having a wide nematic liquid crystal temperature range, a low viscosity, and a large birefringence. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition is composed of A group compounds (each having an anisotropic dielectric constant of >+1.5) and B group compounds (each having an anisotropic dielectric constant of -1.5 to +1.5), and has a nematic phase temperature range of 75 to -10°C and a birefringence (Δn) of 0.16-0.35, wherein the A group compounds are composed of compounds expressed by formulae (1) [R<SP>1</SP>is an alkyl or the like; A<SP>1</SP>is cyclohexylene, phenylene or the like; Z<SP>1</SP>is -COO-, a single bond or the like; X<SP>1</SP>to X<SP>4</SP>are each H, F or Cl; Q<SP>1</SP>is -OCH<SB>2</SB>- or the like; Y<SP>1</SP>is F or Cl; and (l) and (m) are each 0, 1 or 2, provided that (l)+(m) is 1 to 3] and (2) (R<SP>2</SP>is an alkyl or the like; any one of Z<SP>2</SP>and Z<SP>3</SP>is -C≡C- and the other is a single bond; X<SP>5</SP>to X<SP>10</SP>are each H, F or Cl; Q<SP>2</SP>is -OCH<SB>2</SB>- or the like; and Y<SP>2</SP>is F or Cl) and further contain one or more compounds expressed by formula (3) [R<SP>3</SP>is an alkyl or the like; A<SP>2</SP>is cyclohexylene, phenylene or the like; Z<SP>4</SP>is -COO-, a single bond or the like; X<SP>11</SP>and X<SP>12</SP>are each H, F or Cl; and (n) is 1 or 2] in an amount of 5-15%.
