PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cable monitoring system for an elevator capable of easily confirming the presence or absence of hooking of a cable, eliminating an artificial confirming work of the hooking of the cable forcing a complicated and hard work and performing a quick restoring work. SOLUTION: An elevator car 5 is provided within a hoistway 4. When a sway detecting device 10 detects sway of a building, the elevating/lowering of the elevator car 5 is stopped. Detecting bodies 16 and 17 located on an upper side of a hoisting rope 7 as a cable for elevating/lowering for the elevator car 5 at a normal time are guided and dropped along the hoisting rope 7 by making a sway detection of the building by the sway detecting device 10 as a trigger. The presence or absence of dropping of the detecting bodies 16 and 17 is detected by detecting devices 11 and 12 installed in the vicinity of a bottom dead point of the hoisting rope 7.
