PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct positioning for obtaining large inertia torque in starting, and in particular, to restrain swing-back in turning an engine backward by a motor for positioning and thereafter stopping the engine. SOLUTION: The engine is turned backward up to a position in the vicinity of the upper dead center by energizing the motor by a first backward turn part 111 in starting. A second reverse turn part 113 further energizes the engine in the backward turn direction with small torque by reducing an excitation current to the motor after the backward turn by the turn part 111. The excitation current is set to such a level as to obtain a brake action for reducing swing-back in turning the engine backward to a predetermined position of high load and stopping it. The stop position is previously set between an immediately preceding compression upper dead center and an opening-closing operation range of an exhaust valve, and whether or not the engine reaches the stop position is determined by a crank angle.
