PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnesium compound giving an olefin polymer having a narrow particle diameter distribution without deteriorating catalytic performances such as stereoregularity and polymerization activity, to obtain a solid catalyst component for polymerizing an olefin, to obtain a catalyst for polymerizing the olefin, and to provide a method for producing the polyolefin. SOLUTION: The magnesium compound is produced by reacting metal magnesium whose particle diameter distribution index (P) represented by the formula (I): P=(D90/D10)...(I) (D90is a metal magnesium particle diameter corresponding to an accumulated weight fraction of 90%; D10is a metal magnesium particle diameter corresponding to an accumulated weight fraction of 10%) is less than 4.0, with an alcohol and a halogen and/or a halogen-containing compound which contains the halogen atom in an amount of≥0.0001 gram atom per gram atom of the metal magnesium. The solid catalyst component is obtained from the magnesium compound and a titanium compound. Furthermore, the catalyst for polymerizing the olefin is obtained from the solid catalyst component.
