<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of measuring the thickness of a plate capable of measuring the thickness of a coiled plate precisely in a short time on a line, and to provide a device therefor. <P>SOLUTION: On the output side of a rolling line, a coil car 3 is raised to the outer periphery of a rolled up coil 1 on a tension reel 2, and a detector provided in the car 3 detects a contact with the outside of the coil 1, thereby calculating the amount of rise of the coil car 3 from a reference position. The thickness of the coil is calculated based on the amount of the rise. From the thickness of the coil and the number of turns of the coil, the thickness of the plate is calculated on the line.
