PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation system for an automobile for previously storing map data which indicates a map including the present location of the automobile, in a volatile memory in order to speedily display the map when a key switch for starting the motor of the automobile is turned on by means of effectively using the volatile memory. SOLUTION: A navigation device N constitutes a wireless LAN with a terminal T. A microcomputer 50 of the navigation device N, in a state returned from a standby state, extracts map data which includes the map indicating the present location of a passenger car, from among a plurality of items of map data transmitted from the terminal T via a wireless communication device 20, stores it in DRAM 52, and then returns to a standby state.
