PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a plasma display which realizes high quality display excellent in the visibility of black display. SOLUTION: In this plasma display in which discharge cells are formed at crossing parts of row electrodes each consisting of scanning electrodes and of sustaining electrodes and column electrodes, one field comprises: at least one subfield consisting of an initialization period when all discharge cells generate initialization discharge, a writing period for forming wall charge in the discharge cell in accordance with display data, a sustaining period for generating sustaining discharge in the discharge cells in which the wall charge is formed and an erasure period for stopping the sustaining discharge; and a plurality of subfields consisting of a writing period, a sustaining period and an erasure period. In performing scanning by applying a scanning pulse to scanning electrodes of each row in the writing period of a subfield just before a subfield having the initialization period, scanning pulses that are respectively applied to scanning electrodes that continuously scan are made to temporally overlap one another.
