PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly detect abnormality in a contact face between machine parts relatively moved under contact. SOLUTION: This contact face abnormality detector is constituted of the machine parts relatively moved while contacting each other, an ultrasonic probe faced to the contact face between the machine parts and provided in one of the machine parts, a transceiving means for transceiving an ultrasonic wave to the contact face via the ultrasonic probe, and a detecting means for detecting the abnormality of a contact condition on the contact face, based on signal intensity of a reflected wave received by the transceiving part. The reflected wave of the ultrasonic wave is propagated in an inside of the machine parts to be returned again to an emission source of the ultrasonic wave via an oil film. Since a thickness of the oil film gets thin when contact face pressure is high, an attenuation level when the ultrasonic wave is propagated in the oil film gets small to provide the intensified reflected wave intensity resultingly, and the abnormality in the contact face is thereby detected properly by detecting the intensity of the reflected wave.
