PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an austenitic stainless steel foil having excellent properties as a vapor deposition substrate of a high-temperature superconducting material. SOLUTION: Austenitic stainless steel wherein a partial phase transformation into a martensite phase occurs in cold rolling is rolled under a cold rolling draft of 50% or higher into a foil with a thickness of 30-100μm and subjected to the final annealing at 800-900°C in an inert atmosphere containing nitrogen, thus giving an austenitic stainless steel foil having such a crystallinity that the [110] face strength to a random sample is 3.5 or higher and the half width of X-ray (Mo-Kα1) diffraction strength peak of [110] face is 0.18°or lower. Thus, an austenitic stainless steel foil having crystal orientation properties preferable for a vapor deposition substrate of a high-temperature superconducting material is produced, while greatly reducing the production cost of the material.
