The method of operating a motor vehicle with a steering lock (2a) uses a display to provide an alarm signal to the driver if they are about to leave the vehicle with the steering unlocked. The monitor (4) detects the locking position of the steering. The operating condition of the vehicle, such as the ignition operation, door position vehicle locking (2a) is detected to control operation of the steering lock. The alarm can be optical or acoustic.
