PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an enlarged display image with high-definition and to improve the efficiency of light utilization. SOLUTION: In an enlarging display device which switches display images on a display frame constituted of a plurality of sub-frames in accordance with a time to display an display image on an image display element 6 for each sub-frame and enlarges and displays the image displayed on the image display element 6, on an irradiated body 8, the image displayed on the display frame of the image display element 6 is updated to a variable display image in an update sub-field period, and the updated display image is held in a hold sub-field period, and an optical path in an enlarging optical system 7 is shifted in accordance with switching of display images. Thus the time when the updated display image is displayed is made relatively longer than the time when the image enlarged and displayed on the irradiated body 8 fluctuates, by switching of display images on the image display element 6 and shifting of the optical path in the enlarging optical system 7.
