PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the performance degradation of parts caused by temperature rise by preventing dirt and dust from adhering to the optical system and the image sensor of an image reader and also restraining the transmission of heat from a light source to the optical system and the image sensor. SOLUTION: A unit 2 is constituted by integrating a reduction optical system including a lens 12 and a mirror 13 with a CCD image sensor 11, and is covered with a cover member 1. A lamp 3 is on the cover member 1 and spatially isolated from the inside of the unit 2. The slit 16 of the cover member 1 is covered with a transparent member 10. The lamp 3 irradiates an original 17 on an original set glass 18 with light 15a, and reflected light 15b by the original 17 is made incident on the image sensor 11 through the member 10, the slit 16, the mirror 13 and the lens 12, and converted into electrical information, whereby the image information of the original 17 is read.
