PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical element which has a high face accuracy because it is not influenced by the instability of the temperature of the outer periphery of a mold even when a non-oxidizing gas is allowed to flow into the space formed among a sleeve and molds. SOLUTION: In a method for molding an optical element comprising mounting a glass material between a pair of molds 1 and 2 capable of being freely slidably inserted into the inside of the sleeve and press-molding the material 4 by heating the molds 1 and 2 and the material 4, the molding is performed by using molds 1 and 2 each having a diameter larger than the diameter of the optical element to be molded by at least 10 mm while changing the atmosphere in the space 16 formed among the sleeve 3 and the molds 1 and 2.
