Composition comprising a formaldehyde-containing aminoplast resin and a glyoxylate hemiacetal (I) is new. Composition comprising a formaldehyde-containing aminoplast resin and a hemiacetal of formula (I) is new: R 1, R 21-12C alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of an aminoplast binder by reacting an amine with formaldehyde to form a resin and adding an alkanol hemiacetal and catalyst until the aldehyde/diamine equivalent ratio is 0.5-1.5; (2) production of a sheet material by combining a cellulosic material and an aminoplast binder as above in a press.
