PURPOSE: To switch wide display and normal display with a horizontal address circuit using a single shift register. CONSTITUTION: The active matrix display device performs wide display and normal display so as to switch it by providing plural picture elements arranged in a matrix, vertical scanning circuit for successively selecting the picture elements for each row, and horizontal address circuit for point-sequentially addressing the selected picture elements for one row. The horizontal address circuit 1 is provided with a single shift register 2 for which a flip-flop FF equipped with a pair of an input terminal I and an output terminal O is connected on multiple stages as many as the number of all the columns of picture elements. The picture elements are point-sequentially addressed by transferring a start pulse HST for each stage. A wide input switch element W is provided to inject the start pulse HST to the input terminal I of a flip-flop FF1 positioned on the leading stage at the time of wide display. A normal input switch N is provided to inject the start pulse HST to the input terminal I of a flip-flop FFJ positioned on any specified middle stage at the time of normal display.
