PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an underwater decomposition type garbage treatment apparatus wherein over flow is surely prevented by precisely detecting the filling-up of decomposition liquid. SOLUTION: In the underwater decomposition type garbage treatment apparatus wherein garbage charged into a garbage charging apparatus 1 is crushed, introduced into a decomposition vessel 2 and decomposed by microorganisms in the decomposition liquid stored in the decomposition vessel 2, a water supply means 5 for supplying water to the decomposition liquid based on the detected result from a sensor 6 detecting the liquid surface level of the decomposition liquid is provided in the decomposition vessel 2, a proximity sensor 71 for detecting the filling-up when there is the fear of the overflow of the decomposition liquid is provided, and the water supply by the water supply means 5 is stopped based on the detection of the filling-up by the proximity sensor 71. The detection surface of the proximity sensor 71 is cleaned by a cleaning means. The cleaning means is so constituted that a part of the water to be supplied is jetted to the detection surface when water by the water supplying means 5 is supplied.
