PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal insulating technology for molten metal which is excellent in thermal insulating and coating abilities. SOLUTION: A thermal insulating material contains a composite particle 10 in which a multitude of inorganic particles 12 having a hollow portion 14 gather. The composite particle 10 may contain an exothermic particle 16 containing a constituent generating heat by contacting the molten metal, in addition to the inorganic particles 12.
