[Also in Division B8] A shipping container (see Division B8) comprises a framework of metal corner pillars welded to comer members, inwardly-directed abutment surfaces on projections at the pillar ends engaging abutment surfaces formed at the edges of recesses in the corner members. Pillars 16, Fig. 2, are each formed from two members 18, 19 shaped as shown. Tongues 30, 35 at the ends of the pillars have abutment surfaces formed by slots 33 and are engaged in recesses 52, 272 in cast corner members 41, 42, shoulders 54 providing further abutment surfaces. The upper and lower ends of the pillars 16 receive shaped lugs 62, 72 below and above, respectively, the corner members. Pins are driven through holes 73a &c., in the lugs and the pillars and are welded in position: the edges of the tongues 30, 35 are welded to the castings 40, 41, which also are welded to the end edges 34, 39 of the pillars. Upper rails 111, 112 engage over lugs 147, 156 on the corner member 40, to which they are secured by pins 148, 157 and by welding. Similarly, lower rails 110, 113 engage over lugs 119, 135 on the corner members 41 to which they are pinned and welded. Aligned holes 78, 79 &c. in the tongues and corner members can be used for handling the container. Pillars 17, Fig. 3, at the other end of the container, have pairs of tongues 84, 85; 86, 87 at each end engaged in recesses 97, 102 &c. on the faces of cast corner members 96, 98. The edges of the tongues 84 &c. are welded to the corner members 96 &c. The upper and lower rails 111, 150; 117, 125 are engaged over lugs 123, 149 on the corner members 96, 98, to which they are welded and pinned. Aligned holes 93, 107 &c. in the tongues and corner members and top holes 108, can be used for handling the container. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), generally triangular corners plates (196, 197, 225, 229) are welded and riveted to the rails and the corner pillars (180). |
