[Also in Division E1] In a method of sealing leaks in a water containing structure, e.g. a reservoir or pipe, a high molecular weight, substantially water insoluble, hydrocarbon having sufficient adhesivity to be self-adhesive and to adhere to material forming the said structures, and which is capable of being extruded, or flowed, through an orifice to form a filament, is melted and then extruded, or flowed, through one or more orifices to form filaments of said hydrocarbon, the thus formed filaments being introduced into said water containing structure to be attracted by a seepage of water through a leak, or leaks, in the structure to the position of to seal said leak, or leaks. As shown, filament forming material, 1 formed e.g. of petroleum resins, steam cracking tars, high viscosity bitumens or, coal tar and having a molecular weight of at least 1000, is placed in a container 2 and preferably subjected to heat and pressure to flow, in filament form, preferably of a diameter not exceeding 1À0 mm. e.g. 0À1 mm., through the orifice 4 of a tube 3 made e.g. of a material such as glass, copper or steel. In an arrangement, Figs. 2a, 2b, not shown, a distributer (6) with a row of nozzles (9) has a heater pipe (8) carrying a hot fluid, e.g. steam or hot oil, and, in order to facilitate the descent of the filaments to the bottom e.g. of a reservoir, a Venturi (14), Fig. 3, not shown, may be employed. In a modification, Fig. 4, filament forming material in a container 21 is fed to distributers 22 which deliver filaments 27 to a ramp 24 which has jets of water 30 delivered to it by means of a pump 32, a conduit 31, and a distributer 26, the filaments being cut to the desired length by a laterally traversable blowpipe, or torch 33. The slope of the ramp 24 can be adjusted by a movable rest 28, and each distributer 22, and its feed conduit 23, is heated by a pipe (34), Figs. 5a, 5b, not shown, which carry e.g. hot oil, the orifices (36) of the distributers each being of triangular cross-sectional shape and adjustable in size by means of a shutter (37), Fig. 6, not shown. In a further modification, Fig. 8, not shown, the material in a lagged container (41), feed pipes (35), and distributers (22), is heated by hot liquid, e.g. oil regulated by a thermostat 48, in a closed pipe system (34) having a circulating pump (47) and a reservoir (45), the material in the container (41) being circulated by a pump (44) and pipes (43). The pumps (44), (47) may be powered by an electric generating unit (49). An independent installation for producing filaments may be installed on a boat, Fig. 9, not shown. The filaments preferably have a diameter ranging from 0À02 to 1À0 mm. and may be provided with a longitudinal core e.g. of plastics or glass fibre.
